January 13: A Sunny Sunday in Havana

Amanda Aplin

Our group on the steps of the Museo de la Revolucion

Tour of old Havana:

We observed many beautiful historic building and architecture as well as the statue of Carlos Cespedes. Carlos Cespedes whom is a historical figure and hero who was a white wealthy sugar plantation owner that freed all of this slaves. Cespedes also ended up sacrificing his son to ensure all slaves would remain free, as Cespedes felt all men were his sons equally.

Plaza de Armas we learned has a wooden street in the front of the building placed by the wife of a general to ensure she could sleep as the horse and carriages that were constantly passing in front of the house were loud and preventing her from getting her naps.

The Square:

It was intriguing to see and hear the history of the square and get to see where all of the cruise ships arrive along with the great history of the surrounding buildings and vegetation.

Hotel Ambos Mundos:

Rooftop bar at Hotel Ambos Mundos

We toured the rooftop, but to really capture the beauty a bit of work was required via a large staircase with multiple flights. We enjoyed the sunlight along with some wonderful drinks.

We finished the day with a tour of the Museo de la Revolucion and were intrigued to hear the stories of the Batista leadership receiving gun fire into the Museo, where the bullet holes still remain. One couldn’t help but observe the beautiful art created on the dome of the Museo.
